Step 1: Choose Your Main Photo
The main photo is the large image that people see from a distance — the portrait the mosaic is built around. Here's what makes a great main photo:
- Use a close-up. Faces work far better than wide landscapes or group shots. The closer the crop, the more detail shows in the final mosaic.
- Make sure it's in focus and well-lit. A blurry or dark photo will produce a blurry, dark mosaic.
- High resolution is important. The higher the resolution, the sharper your mosaic will be.
Popular main photo choices include: a wedding portrait, a couple photo, a graduation picture, a portrait of a pet, or a treasured family photo.
Step 2: Gather Your Small Photos
The small photos are what the mosaic is built from — hundreds of tiny images that tile together to form the main portrait. You'll need:
- At least 200 photos — this is the minimum for a good result
- 500–1,000 photos — this gives the richest, most detailed mosaic with the best colour variety
- Duplicates are fine — if you have fewer photos, we can repeat them without it being noticeable
The best small photos are personal and varied — holidays, birthdays, everyday moments, old favourites and new ones. The more colour variety and diversity in the small photos, the more stunning the final result.
Step 3: Choose Your Format and Size

Step 4: Place Your Order and Send Your Photos
Once you've placed your order, you'll receive upload instructions by email immediately. You can share your photos via Google Drive, iCloud, Dropbox, Shutterfly, or send them directly to support@ateliermosaics.com.
You don't need to organise or edit the photos before sending — just share them as they are.
Step 5: Review Your Preview
Before anything is printed, we create your mosaic and send you a full digital preview for approval. You can request adjustments at this stage — we want to make sure you love it before it goes to print.
Step 6: Receive Your Mosaic
Once approved, your mosaic is produced and shipped. Delivery times are:
- Digital File — 3 business days after receiving your photos
- Photo Print — approximately 6 business days of production, plus delivery
- Canvas and framed prints — approximately 7 business days of production; Acrylic — approximately 10–12 business days, plus delivery

Step 1: Decide what story the mosaic should tell
Before choosing files, define the purpose of the artwork. An anniversary mosaic may follow a relationship through different years; a retirement design may document a career; a memorial can preserve a life across generations. This decision helps you choose a main image and prevents the smaller collection from becoming a random camera roll.
Step 2: Select a clear main photograph
The main photograph creates the portrait seen from a distance. Look for a recognizable subject, useful contrast and enough resolution for the selected dimensions. Close portraits usually translate more clearly than distant group pictures. A simple background helps, but it is not required. Submit two alternatives if you would like guidance before the final design.
Step 3: Build the smaller photo collection
Collect at least 200 images; 500–1,000 is recommended for the best variety. Include different people, places, years and types of moments. Original phone or camera files are preferable to screenshots. Scanned prints are welcome, and imperfect but meaningful photographs often deserve a place in the design.
- Remove accidental screenshots and files that are completely unreadable.
- Keep natural expressions and candid moments.
- Include both major milestones and ordinary daily life.
- Place the main photograph in a separate folder.
- Do not spend time renaming hundreds of files unless it helps your own organization.
Step 4: Share photographs securely
Use Google Drive, Dropbox, OneDrive, iCloud, Google Photos, Shutterfly, Amazon Photos or WeTransfer. Make sure the folder permission allows access through the link, then email it with your order number to support@ateliermosaics.com. The photographs can be submitted while ordering or afterward.
Step 5: Review the proof
A digital proof is sent before production. Examine the main portrait from a normal viewing distance, then zoom in to inspect the smaller photographs. Check crop, brightness, overall color balance and the placement of important visual areas. Free revisions are included before approval, and nothing is printed until you confirm the design.
Step 6: Choose a format and size
The 300 DPI digital file is suitable for local printing and close deadlines. Photo prints use premium semi-gloss paper. Canvas arrives ready to hang, wood and metal framed prints provide a finished presentation, and 4 mm acrylic offers a glossy surface with vivid depth.
We recommend at least 16 × 20 inches because very small prints make individual photographs difficult to recognize. Sizes such as 18 × 24, 20 × 30 and 24 × 36 inches provide more comfortable viewing, depending on the proportions of the main image and available wall space.
Step 7: Allow for production and delivery
After approval, a digital file normally requires 3 business days, photo prints about 6 business days, canvas and framed prints about 7 business days, and acrylic approximately 10–12 business days. Physical delivery commonly adds about 4–6 business days and depends on destination. For a fixed event date, include time for collecting photographs and reviewing revisions.
